The ₱5 Discount That Reminded Me to Be Grateful

A small act of kindness that outweighed all the scams

Elly Mar

Yesterday, something small but meaningful happened. I was at one of the school canteens, and on a whim, I asked the cashier if I could get a discount. I told her I was about to graduate and that this might be my last time buying food there. To my surprise, she smiled and said yes — giving me ₱5 off my drink. Later, when I bought two burgers, she did it again.

That small act of kindness stuck with me. It reminded me how powerful generosity is, even in the smallest forms. I left feeling genuinely thankful — not just for the discount, but for the kindness behind it.

It made me reflect: Yes, there are moments in life that frustrate me. I’ve been scammed before — once recently, and it stressed me out the entire day. But looking back, those rare, negative experiences can’t compare to the kindness I receive more often than not.

So now, I’m holding onto two simple mindsets:

1 Always ask — and make it fun. I’ll keep asking for discounts when I’m in the mood. Not to take advantage, but to spark a small moment of shock and connection. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn’t. But it makes the day lighter.

2 Remember: I’ve received more kindness than cruelty. When someone takes advantage of me, I’ll let it go. Karma will handle it. I’ll keep spreading the kind of kindness I’ve been lucky to experience so often — and I’ll stay grateful for those who show it to me and to others.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the ₱15 discount - (5x3). It’s about the feeling that kindness still wins.
