Career Advice from Sir Darwin

A reflection on leadership, ego, and playing the long game

This afternoon, I had a conversation with Sir Darwin, and one thing he said really stood out to me: “Follow your gut.” If you believe you'll excel at something, go for it. He also reminded me that “You can’t please everyone — you need to adjust.”

Follow Your Gut

That advice matters. Following your gut gives you the drive to be the best at what you do. I believe in the idea that if something is meant for you, it will happen in time. Every one of us has our own greatest moment, and we’ll be guided there by instinct. So trust it.

On Leadership, Ego, and Accountability

I shared my thoughts with Sir Darwin about leadership — how I envision being the head of a sector someday, but at the same time, I struggle with the idea of having a boss superior to me, especially when that boss is unaccountable. I told him I want to create a system where everyone, including my superiors, is held accountable. For example, if there's an event, everyone — regardless of position — should be on time. Simple rules. Fair rules.

To me, leaders lead by example.

But Sir Darwin cautioned me against trying to “overpower” someone in a higher position. He said that in the real world, many bosses are egotistic and resist being ruled. That hit hard. It reminded me of Robert Greene’s first law of power: Never outshine the master.

Playing the Game

Thinking about it now — it makes sense. This is a game. A long, strategic one. And maybe the only way to survive it is to play smart: wait for your turn, shape your time, and build your influence quietly.

You can lead, yes. You can even change the system. But first, you must understand it deeply. Sometimes you need to adjust. Sometimes you need to manipulate. But most of all — you need to know when to speak, when to act, and when to listen.

Because the ultimate goal is not just to rise. It's to rise with integrity, reshape the broken systems, and transform these so-called “leaders” into real ones — or replace them entirely.
