Meeting Jose Rizal: A Personal Reflection

A Journey of Discovery and Freedom in Manila's Historic Heart

As I travel alone through Manila, 🚢🏻 I reflect on a particularly crazy journey that led me to Rizal's Monument, 🏞️ where I find myself writing this article now. ✍🏻

My original plan was to visit Fort Santiago,

but somehow I ended up in Intramuros instead. Before reaching Intramuros, I nearly headed north to Valenzuela because the bus conductor seemed indifferent or didn't care to where I needed to get off. Following my instincts, I decided to alight and used Grab's services to correct my course, despite the extra cost. This diversion eventually brought me to Intramuros.

Upon arriving, I found myself surrounded by massive walls that encased ancient Spanish architectural designs, along with numerous Kalesas. Intramuros turned out to be much larger than I anticipated, and initially, I was unsure of what to do.

I had hoped to locate Jose Rizal's monument and embarked on a lengthy walk,

finally spotting the iconic landmark up close. Although I refrained from taking a photo, I knew I would return here in the future.

My visit to Intramuros allowed me to experience a sense of freedom that I had been seeking since arriving in Manila, despite my wallet nearing emptiness. Being alone meant I didn't have to deal with any irritating companions, which made the experience even more remarkable. Despite nearly getting lost and enduring a long walk on a tight budget,

meeting Jose Rizal was an act of independence for me.

Thanks self for managing your finances wisely, I was able to wander and witness everything firsthand.
