Food Left Over

Filipinos love leaving a little bit of food even when it can be finished in just a few bites.🍽️ I find this behavior irritating,😒 especially in the boarding house where I stay with my aunt and cousins. 🏢 This behavior of leaving a small portion of food seems to be common practice 📝 in family or group gatherings which obviously a Filipino culture. 🇵🇭

Look, I don't know their reasons for not finishing their food, but from my observation, they might get intimidated by being the last person to finish. They might perceive that people will think they're greedy if they eat everything. Maybe they don't like the food or they are already full. However, this behavior can lead to food waste, as leftovers can spoil. Perhaps the biggest concern is food waste, as leftover food can spoil. Additionally, it creates the playful notion that the group can't finish the food, even if it's not a large portion.

While I may dislike this behavior, what can I do to change it? It seems like people have been doing this since they were kids influenced by their parents, this behaviour is being passed generation to generation so it might not change anytime soon. So, in the boarding house, when they leave leftovers, it depends on my mood. Most of the time, I eat the leftovers, but sometimes I let someone else do it to avoid them spoiling. Overall, I find it strange to leave food uneaten when it could obviously be finished.

On the bright side, this Filipino custom is actually quite sweet. They tend to leave a little bit of food for those who haven't had a chance to try it yet, showing their thoughtfulness towards others. This kind and considerate side of Filipinos is truly astonishing. Hopefully, this is indeed the reason why people do this!
